It's been a while since I posted a blog, so I thought I'd better. Here are some upcoming events plus information from the three Palmer campuses:

Davenport Campus

The next Clinical Research Journal Club meeting on the Davenport Campus is Tuesday, June 9, from 9:20-10:10 a.m. in the basement seminar room of the William and Jo Harris Building. Send in Your Team Member Names for Dr. Kern’s Health Challenge! While orientation and final registration for Dr. Kern’s Health Challenge will take place at the beginning of the next trimester in July, you may register your team for the challenge any time before then. The challenge is for teams of six faculty and/or staff members, and will include several component challenges, including weight loss, a walking program and a wellness education section with fitness, nutrition and other classes. If you’ve already organized your team, just send an e-mail to Dr. Roger Hynes with the names of your six team members, your team name (i.e. The Palmer Wellness Champs) and indicate which person is your team captain.

There will be a $5 registration fee per person, which may be paid during the orientation meetings for faculty and staff in July. You’ll receive your official Dr. Kern’s Health Challenge T-shirt at those meetings. In addition to registering as a team, employees will sign up as individuals for any or all of the challenge’s components, and earn points that contribute to their team’s overall total. Prizes will be awarded for the top finishers in the component challenges as well as overall. Start thinking about your team and how you would like to participate, and look for more information in TuesdE-news, Palmer News Online and Palmer Communications e-mails. This is a pilot program for one trimester (July-October 2009) that will hopefully prove to be ongoing and implemented on all three campuses. It’s a great way to start healthy habits for a healthier you!

Don’t Miss Out on the Savings. Early Registration for Homecoming ends June 15. Register today for the Davenport Campus Homecoming, Aug. 13-15. The registration fee for faculty and staff is $50 until June 15 and includes admission to all sessions, the exhibit hall, a registration packet, breakfasts, lunches, refreshment breaks, as well as the Saturday Night Festival. Running the Bix? Sign up for your free Palmer Bix tank top. To guarantee your shirt size, sign up by Friday, June 26, at the Welcome Center desk in the Academic Health Center. Women’s and men’s sizes will be available. Registration forms also will be available.

Student Patient Education Awareness and Knowledge (S.P.E.A.K.) is working with Country Corner Farm near Galesburg, Ill., to make locally-grown fresh fruits and vegetables available to Davenport Campus students and employees. By becoming a shareholder in this Community Supported Agriculture program (CSA) you will receive the produce you’ve requested within 24 hours of being picked. You select a half or full bushel of the produce you want which will be delivered to the campus once per week or every other week, depending on the quantity desired.

Students who want to become shareholders must submit a $50 deposit with their application, with the remaining balance due by the first week of the Summer Trimester.

Employees who wish to become shareholders for the entire season must submit payment for the entire share selected with their application.

All applications should be submitted to Dr. Julie Johnson by Monday, June 1, for the full 16-week schedule. Student applications for the abbreviated schedule are due by graduation day, June 19.

There is oh so much going on at Palmer lately. What, you're asking?

EVENTS

• The Davenport Campus is hosting the Diversity in Chiropractic Forum for prospective students April 26-27. Palmer alumni with diverse ethnic backgrounds will discuss opportunities in chiropractic and diversity in the profession. Students will learn about prerequisites, the admissions process and financial aid as well as the state of diversity in the profession and its potential growth. Palmer administrators and faculty also will speak, and participants will tour the campus and talk with current students. This is a FREE event. • The Davenport Campus Clinics are sponsoring a spring food drive to benefit the Christian Care Domestic Violence Shelter & Rescue Mission. There are donation boxes located throughout the Davenport Campus. Donate canned and non-perishable food items through April 30.

• The Davenport Campus Student Council is hosting the Palmer N8K charity run to benefit Special Olympics on Saturday, May 2, at 8 a.m. You don't have to be a Palmer student to participate; it's open to everyone! Visit www.GetMeRegistered.com to register.

NEWS

• Palmer's Associate of Science in Chiropractic Technology (ASCT) degree program has been recognized as meeting new Iowa physiotherapy legislative requirements. Great news for C.T.s!

• In March 2009, Palmer took part in the CollegeWeekLive.com virtual college fair. It went so well, we're going to have another virtual "booth" there in November! E-mail me for details: minda.powers@palmer.edu.

• On March 21, a team of Florida Campus faculty helped build a home with Habitat for Humanity, and the campus sponsored Port Orange Kidz Dayz in City Center Park.

I'm looking into using Skype for distance interviews and recording podcasts. I'm currently looking into what is necessary for recording, as far as the actual recording is concerned. Does anyone have any ideas on inexpensive solutions?

The CollegeWeekLive.com virtual fair is SWEET

Obviously, I'm a big fan of technology. I love the Internet so much that a friend of mine told me I should marry it. (Don't worry, I'm already married so I didn't.) So I'm up for checking out new and interesting stuff, even if it turns out to be something that I wouldn't necessarily use personally--because you never know! Something that at first may seem "out there" could turn out to be just what the chiropractor ordered.

Take CollegeWeekLive.com, for example. It may be one of those college sites that generally promotes undergraduate colleges, but it can certainly work for us as a first-profession college. Plus, not only are we getting the attention of our traditional prospective students, we can also spark interest in those students who are health-minded and hadn't even considered chiropractic as one of their options. Yet. By just "being out there" we are connecting with people. We telling them about chiropractic and what Palmer is all about. How cool is that?

I tell you what, CollegeWeekLive.com really knows what they're doing. By hosting virtual college fairs, they can attract tons of students who want to learn about a number of colleges without the hassle of travel or crowds. I remember going to a college fair back in my day and not being able to talk to a rep because some of the booths were so crowded. At the time I thought that if they don't have the time to speak to me one-on-one now, what's it going to be like on the actual campus? Will I just be a number? I don't know about you, but when I'm making life decisions, I want to be able to focus and to have the focus of the person I need to talk to.

At the virtual college fair today (I went in myself because I just HAD to check it out), I watched videos, clicked in to chat with reps, found out more info, "sat in" on a presentation, and basically did everything I would have done at a live fair. Wicked cool!

So what are you waiting for? If it's still March 26 when you're reading this (and it's before 10 p.m. EDT), go check it out!

Welcome to the Palmer College of Chiropractic blog, the beta version. It's experimental as I (and we, meaning Palmer) get our feet wet in the blogosphere.

You'll recognize me by my online moniker "Minda @ Palmer" -- because that's who I am. Basically, I'm your main liaison in the social media world world to Palmer College of Chiropractic.
